First and second graders at Woodfin Elementary recently had a wild and unforgettable learning experience thanks to a special visit from Big Game Warden Austin Keever. Bringing the outdoors straight into the classroom, Keever introduced students to the fascinating world of North Carolina wildlife in a hands-on and engaging way.

Students eagerly gathered as Keever shared stories from his work protecting animals and preserving natural habitats. The excitement grew as he revealed a collection of real animal skins, giving students a rare opportunity to see - and even touch - the textures of creatures they may only read about in books.

From the soft fur of a beaver to the sleek coat of a fox, students explored each animal with curiosity and wonder. They also exclaimed their familiar features of a raccoon, the tiny details of a squirrel, and the unique feel of an opossum, along with several others.

The visit not only sparked excitement but also deepened students’ understanding of local wildlife and the important role conservation plays in protecting these species. With wide eyes and lots of questions, Woodfin’s young learners walked away with a new appreciation for the animals that share their environment - and people who work every day to protect them.
