Lee Rouson speaking to students.

Community High School had the opportunity to meet and learn from an NFL great. Former New York Giants running back Lee Rouson took center stage as he delivered a passionate speech centered around one simple but profound question: “Who are you?”

Rouson, a two-time Super Bowl champion, shared his personal journey - his triumphs and struggles - to encourage students to reflect on their own identities beyond labels, setbacks, or circumstances.

“You are more than what you do. You are more than what people say about you. Who you are comes from within,” Rouson told the students. “When you understand your value, you can rise above any challenge.”

His message resonated deeply with students. Principal Cathy Haughney expressed her gratitude for Rouson’s visit, emphasizing the impact of his words.

“Mr. Rouson's presentation was positive, uplifting, and encouraging,” she said. “The students enjoyed having him, one even asked him to play a round of golf in the future, and Mr. Rouson shared his phone number to make the outing a reality for the young man.”

Rouson’s visit to Community High was part of a larger tour, speaking to several Buncombe County Schools. At each stop, he encouraged students to embrace their worth, make positive choices, and believe in their potential.

“If you have never asked yourself who am I? You are never going to answer it,” Mr. Rouson explained. “I hope many kids ask themselves that question. As they move forward in life they will see their purpose.”

His words left an impression, with many students staying behind after the speech to shake his hand, ask questions, and share their own dreams. For Community High and the other schools he visited, Rouson’s message was clear - greatness isn’t just about what you achieve, but about knowing who you truly are.
