ESL

The ESL (English as a Second Language) Department at Woodfin Elementary School is comprised of one part-time licensed teacher, Ms. Julie Feldkamp. Ms. Feldkamp brings to the school a variety of skills which help our students whose primary language is not English to achieve to their highest academic potential

Ms. Feldkamp works directly with students – sometimes in their regular classrooms as a small group leader, sometimes in the ESL classroom, and sometimes in other available spaces in the school building. ESL instruction focuses on assisting students who speak another language at home to listen, speak, read and write effectively and correctly in English. The two overarching goals of the ESL curriculum are to improve students’ use of reading comprehension strategies to understand grade-level texts, and to improve their knowledge and fluency in academic vocabulary. Educational research has shown these to be the areas most critical to the academic achievement of students from diverse language backgrounds.

Ms. Feldkamp would also like to do all he can to facilitate communication between parents and school staff whenever there is a language barrier. By facilitating connections between the school, the community and the immigrant parents, the ESL staff hopes to make it possible for us all to work more closely together to provide a strong foundation, thus ensuring success for all of Woodfin's students as they move on to the next level and out into the world.  It is the job and privilege of the ESL department to do this. Please do not hesitate to contact us if there are any concerns related to the education of ELLs at Woodfin Elementary.
